“Being compared to a huff isn’t so bad, James,” Lily said, but she couldn’t keep a straight face. They did love mocking that house, but Lily had to admit she was glad she was in Gryffindor instead. Things tended to get a little… weird in Hufflepuff house, or so she’d heard. She could totally imagine James and his band of merry men living to a ripe old age, sitting no some porch somewhere, still pranking each other after all those years.
Lily bristled a little when he used his old nickname for her. But then, she couldn’t expect things to change overnight. She still didn’t really get the nickname though, except for the reference to gingersnaps. “I’m sorry, James… but what the hell does that nickname mean?” she asked it a little hesitantly, if only because she felt like he’d been wanting her to ask. Like it was some game, and by asking, she’d lost. It was so frustrating not to know, though, and she felt he owed her that much at least.
Lily was most surprised that he’d actually invited her to the party willingly. After all, wouldn’t it be easier just to ignore each other for a while? Maybe they should just run in different circles for a bit, to ease their feelings. Lily considered this, but it would definitely be hard to extricate themselves from each other’s lives. Better probably just to soldier through it. Maybe things would get normal more quickly if they willed it to be normal. It couldn’t hurt to try. With a determined nod, Lily said, “I’ll do my best to ignore all the obvious rules violations you’ll have going that night.” She grinned at the idea of a marauder’s style engagement party. It would be quite interesting considering the husband-to-be was a Slytherin. “Besides, if that party blows up like I think it will, I don’t want to hear about it in the next morning’s gossip mill. I’d rather see it firsthand.”
Lily thought back to Trent. Would he ask her to go with him? It would certainly be awkward if she showed up to one of James’ parties with a plus one- especially so close to their truce. Still, id she ended up dating Trent, James would just have to deal with it. She decided not to tell him just yet. Maybe the element of surprise would help her just this once.

i solemnly swear that i am up to no good , the inevitable talk James moaned. ”Right. You can’t deny that you’d cry a little bit if people started calling you a Hufflepuff,” he joked in a defeated tone, sliding down back into the depths of his chair. ”Or if you joined the Gobstones club.”
A smile spread over his full lips and eventually turned into a grin as Lily asked about the nickname he had kindly bestowed upon her. They were trying to get along, yes (and so far it had been working like a charm), but he wasn’t ready to give up his playful ways yet. Especially when it was something as harmless as this. ”What do you reckon it means?” he mirrored, sitting up straighter in his chair with anticipation of her answer. ”I’ll tell you, don’t worry, but I just want to know what you think.”
James had no idea about the turmoil he was about to put himself through by inviting Lily to the party. He was blissfully oblivious to Trent’s new hand in Lily’s life.
”Well, we have Professor Zolnerowich’s blessing for the party, so it can’t be all bad, can it?” he asked. She’d probably want to know the rest of that story, but James getting awfully tired, and it would just have to wait for another night.
Unable to keep himself from yawning, James stretched out and winced as he felt a few of his joints pop. ”Well, I’m beat,” he said as he helped himself up off the couch. The clock hanging above the fireplace indicated that it was well past midnight, and James had already had a full day of classes and bartering with Rosie down at the Three Broomsticks.
”I’m really glad we had this talk, Lily,” he said solemnly, a small (but sincere) smile appearing. He wanted to say goodnight, or sleep well, or sweet dreams, but something got caught in his throat and left him unable to speak.

[/div] Lily shook her head and smiled. Of course he wasn’t going to tell her. That would be like telling her his master plan, and James Potter was never going to do that. “I don’t know… all I can think is the reference to Gingersnaps,” Lily replied, shrugging. She sighed as she tried to imagine what it meant, and it was driving her crazy. She wouldn’t tell him that, though.
“How in the…” Lily started, with a suspicious look. “You know what, I’m not even going to ask how you got professor permission for a party with underage wizards drinking. I’m sure it had something to do with… blackmail or treason or something.” She waved a hand dismissively. It really was better that she didn’t know.
Lily felt herself yawn automatically after he did. It was odd; her insomnia had all but fled now that she didn’t have quite so much to fret about. It really seemed like the relief of the situation had given her back her sleepiness. Or maybe yawns were just contagious. Either way if she was going to get any sleep at all, she’d need to run with the yawning while she could. “I should hit the hay too,” Lily replied, accidentally suing yet another muggle reference James wouldn’t get. “I have a date at Madame Puddifoot’s with the girls tomorrow anyway.”
Lily stood subconsciously mimicking James’ stretching movements. It was amazing the tension that could build up just from sitting in a chair for hours on end. But halfway through, she noticed James was being serious and how silly she must have looked in that moment. “Me too,” she agreed, nodding. “I think it was a long time coming.” She stood there awkwardly for a moment, not sure if there was something else she should do or say.

i solemnly swear that i am up to no good , the inevitable talk James raised his eyebrows, unable to keep his playful ‘I-know-something-that-you-don’t’ smile off his face. ”That’s part of it,” he said, wanting to leave Lily guessing. He said he’d tell her, but he never said when. James gave Lily a knowing grin, hoping that she’d picked up on what he’d actually meant whe he said he’d tell her.
They stood awkwardly, neither of them sure of what to do next. ”Yeah,” James breathed. There was a painful feeling in his chest – like he wanted to reach out and touch her, but at the same time knowing that he never could. ”Goodnight, Lily,” he muttered, feeling rather daft at leaving things like that. James turned away from her and wandered up the staircase, towards the boys dormitory. He didn’t look back – he didn’t think he could take it.
James didn’t sleep very well that night. As much as he’d enjoyed being able to talk to Lily like a normal person (he’d probably enjoyed it more than he let on), their heated argument lingered in his mind.
Every word she had said about him was absolutely true. Big headed, arrogant… He’d never given Lily a proper chance when everything was said and done.
This was it – his chance to start things over. And as Wormtail shifted in his sleep and begun snoring again, James made a promise to himself.
He wasn’t going to stuff things up between him and Lily. Not this time.
